Audition Process
Our audition process is quite simple really. The week before the audition date, a signup sheet will appear on our club organization board, located in the music hallway in the Ferguson Center of the Arts. You write your name in a blank spot on the page, and you take a packet of audition material that is provided on the board. You must sign up for an audition slot on the sheet provided in the music hallway in order to reserve an audition time. The audition consists of three parts: a group piece, a solo piece, and a sight reading example. The group piece and solo piece will be provided in the packet, however the sight reading piece will obviously be provided during your audition. I have detailed each audition requirement below.
Group pieceYou are only required to learn one voice part in the group piece, however you should learn your preferred voice part that you are auditioning for. During your audition, you will sing with three Uncommon Ground members, each on a different part than you.
Tips: Know your part well enough so you don't get distracted, and try to balance your sound with the singer's sound around you. |
Solo piece The solo piece will be the accompanied portion of the audition. A pianist is provided, and they will play the chords that are listed on the solo lead sheet.
You will be expected to give the accompanist a tempo. Also, the solo piece must be sung in the key provided on the music. Tips: Show us your style and personality. The accompanist will follow you. |
Sight readingThe sight reading piece is exactly what it sounds like, read on sight. There will be two examples, one for the male voice, and one for the female voice. You may sing the sight reading on any syllable you choose, whether it be solfege, numbers, or "la".
Tips: If you mess up, just keep going! |
MOST IMPORTANTLY! We want to see you succeed in your audition for us. Do not be afraid to show us who you really are, and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
